Discover Canada is an activity package designed to introduce children to the new Canadian Encyclopedia, and consequently, to enlarge their knowledge of Canada and things Canadian.

These activities, suggest the authors, would be best used as part of a learning centre, or, if multiple sets were available, an entire class could work on the exercises. An introductory section comes first, reinforcing sequentially students' information retrieval skills, from familiarization to alphabetizing to key points. The second part is about "Famous Canadians" and the third is entitled "Canadian Studies." Students learn a good deal of information as they research the lives of important Canadians and list in point form their accomplishments and the highlights of their careers. The "Canadian Studies" section includes quick facts, landmarks, resources, and detailed provincial and territorial studies. Here, the students choose a province or territory they have studied and enlarge upon their information. Discover Canada is a quality learning tool for grades 4,5,6 and top grade 3's, and does indeed expand one's knowledge of Canada.

Beyond the Boundaries activity sheets have "an open-ended approach to research activities" using the Encyclopedia Britannica, Compton's Encyclopedia, or the Canadian Encyclopedia, but I expect other encyclopedias would do too.

Another quality product, the concentration of this package is on communities, which include Indians of the Eastern Forest, Northwest Coast Indians, and North American

Plains Indians. Also discussed are "Human Migration," "Exploration an and Discovery," "Early Settlements," and "Urban Communities." Particularly applicable to the curriculum of grades 4 and 5, these learning materials could be used with older children, as various levels of difficulty are covered. As the research questions are open-ended, many different results will ensue. Children are asked to make up a legend, make a mural, wall charts, a game, a Haida Village, tell a Story in sign language, make dioramas, collages, mobiles of the growth of a town, the development of a farm, the components of a city, log a typical day in a covered wagon, or dress in the clothing of a favourite occupation. All these activities, and more, are a result of, and follow the research.

Both Discover Canada and Beyond the Boundaries are written in beautiful calligraphy with appropriate illustrations, both being dark, clear, a pleasure to read, and easily reproduced. Both packages are recommended.

The Center for Applied Research in Education in New York has produced a similar series called "Guided Research Discovery Units" on history, science, geography, and language arts, but the Center's lessons are at a lower level, more constricting or contrived than either Discover Canada or Beyond the Boundaries, even though the Center recommends its units for ages nine to twelve, too.
