A great deal of research and scholarship has been put into the compilation of detailed historical information contained in the revised edition of this important Canadian reference work. Professor Frederick H. Armstrong of the University of Western Ontario has divided the volume into eight sections, and also included tables and diagrams, maps, and a subject index. The sections include: "British Sovereigns, Ministers, Officials, and Major Events;" "Provincial Officials, 1791-1841;" "The Parliaments, 1792-1840;" "The Judiciary and the Legal Profession;" "Local and Municipal Government, 1788-1849;" "Social Government Departments and Commissions;" "Supplementary Information;" and a "Select Bibliography." Each section begins with a few paragraphs that set the historical background regarding the details of local government in Upper Canada. This work will be of particular interest in academic libraries. However, it could also be helpful in secondary school libraries for senior students who are conducting intensive research into the such areas of Canadian history as the War of 1812 and the Rebellion of 1837.
