Helwig uses the age-old technique of a dying man's flashbacks to his life, Through this technique we meet the people who played important roles in the life of the bishop. The encounters include Rose, his secretary, Ishatuk, an Inuit shaman. Amelia, the bishop's wife, and Norman, the half-wit who had found sanctuary in the cathedral. There is nothing very new in this story; as a matter of fact, I found it somewhat boring reading. The plot is far too convoluted and hard to find to make it suitable for school use. Add to this the attempts at mysticism, and one gets a novel that is probably of interest only to adults.
