Catherine Lange marries David Ferny, knowing that she loves his brother Robert. Once chance brings the two young people together, it takes a great deal of luck to keep them together. The legacy comes from the marriage of propriety and necessity that makes Jeanne Ferny's, the mother's, life with her autocratic husband one of hate and dismay. When her husband dies and frees her to be herself, she no longer knows how. The brothers stumble over each other in their attempts to communicate, and Robert comes perilously close to refusing to communicate with Catherine. Catherine has an ace up her sleeve in her aunt and guardian, Francoise, whose love is pure. The story is intriguing and the message is clear. For senior students and public libraries.
