Herbert Roland Percy has been called Canada's oldest new writer. The English-born naval engineer brings a lifetime of experience to Kis craft and a great love of literature. He has a vivid imagination, a painter's eye for detail, and the ability to evoke the senuous in his Nova Scoiian environment and in his characters. Such a writer can afford to experiment in such stories as "Reflections" and "Shadows." where multiple-mirror images feature with amazing frequency Percy's long-haired heroines. The model boat builder of the title story epitomizes Percy's existential philosophy, the pragmatic approach softened by the poetry of the language. Most of the eighteen stories have been published elsewhere. Collected by Sloddart, the volume is a contribution to the short story genre for which Canadian literature is becoming noted. Percy is a mature writer for a mature reader.
