How to use a simple deck of playing cards as an effective educational tool. This book discusses more than one hundred games that are good for a wide range of ages and for many different sized groups, yet develop a great variety of learning skills. Basically aimed at teachers, the work consists of five chapters: "Cards as Educational Tools," "Classification of Games," "Card Tricks," "Solitaires," and "Games." The first chapter summarizes how card games can assist in the development of language, reading activities, number concepts, and divergent thinking. The chapter on classification sorts games into twenty-three categories, including group size, difficulty, and special learning skills (ordering, computation, problem solving). The final chapters outline the directions for each game, giving the suggested age interest, the number of players, the objectives, equipment, instructions, and learning skills. The directions are clear and explicit and could be managed by most middle grade pupils. The classification and excellent index would be of special value to the teacher. The print, format, and layout are pleasing. The author is chief psychologist at the McGill Montreal Children's Hospital, and is also a consultant for the CBC segments of Sesame Street. Her work to enhance learning in imaginative ways has led to the development of a variety of educational media; films, filmstrips, activity sheets, videos, computer software, and an earlier book on educational card games Deal Me In! (Monarch Press, 1985). Highly recommended for all schools and professional collections.
