Inspector Salter is in the public relations office of the Metro Toronto Police and he must decide whether to ruffle feathers in the department by doing a vigorous investigation or whether to do a cursory examination that can be used to placate political interests. Salter's former wife, who now holds a highly visible political position in the mayor's office, has complained that because the murder victim was a poor woman not much effort was put forth in the investigation, Salter has appeared previously in Death in the Old Country* and Smoke Detector,** where he established a reputation as a human and very thorough investigator. In his life away from the job he has to deal with such mundane but real topics as what to buy his family for Christmas, how to deal with the jealousy of his current wife, and the vagaries of the weather. The previous books have been very successful and this one deserves the same popularity. Wright has created a very likeable and intelligent detective who has all of the same problems as his readers. This book should be on the shelves of all Canadian public and high school libraries. In the latter institutions it will prove popular with staff members and senior students. Jerry McDonnell, F.E.
