The London (Ontario) Council for Adult Education, in conjunction with the Canadian Library Association, has produced an excellent series of books aimed at the adult education and E.S.L, market. The books, which feature famous Canadians from across the country, are simple in format with black-and-white photos on the covers and throughout the book. The chapters are deliberately kept very short and the vocabulary is controlled as much as possible. Those words that are beyond the scope of the simplified vocabulary used, but which need to be included because of the context of the story, are put in a glossary at the end of the book so that the teacher can easily check for potential problems and pre-teach as needed. The books are colour coded to match the reading level of the stories, which in turn approximate the four levels of the Fry Readability Scale.

The books are unusual in that they serve a dual purpose: encouraging reading and literacy while at the same time improving the student's knowledge of this beautiful country we live in and its people. The books come with a teacher's guide, which offers helpful suggestions on their use according to situation and setting.

In summary, Operation Literacy Series II is a non-flashy, competent, very useful series of books that will be an asset to any secondary E.S.L and language arts program and, equally, any adult education program.
