Celebrating!: Twenty-five Years on the Stage at the Shaw Festival, edited by Katherine Holmes, is a book that school and public librarians will want to purchase for their theatre sections. In addition, many of the thousands of theatre goers who have enjoyed the plays at the theatres in Niagara-on-the-Lake, near Niagara Falls, Ontario, will enjoy it as a souvenir of outstanding performances. Rather magazine-like in appearance, with its soft covers, larger size, and many pictures, the book celebrates twenty-five years of the Shaw Festival. The front and back covers present a fold-over picture of the ballroom scene from the very successful production of "Cavalcade" in 1985/ 86. Inside the covers is an alphabetical list of all the members of the acting ensemble from 1962 to 1986. At the end is a chronological list of the productions for each year. Christopher Newton, the present artistic director, has written an introduction, which is followed by a brief historical account of the highlights of the Festival's development. Most of the book, however, is a series of fine photographs of scenes from the plays, usually one or more for each year. The first is of Herb Foster as Bernard Shaw in "Pygmalion" in 1982, and others include scenes from "Major Barbara," "Man and Superman," and "Blithe Spirit." These pictures form a valuable record of costumes, sometimes sets, and the spirit of the production as a whole. Congratulations to Holmes for compiling this fine volume, to those who supported it financially, and to the Shaw Festival for maintaining the spirit of excellence reflected in the book.
