Rachel's campaign for election, Griff's search for a real friend, and Jeffrey's struggle to live up to his father's expectations all reflect real problems of a grade 5 student in Toronto, or in any other urban school community. The themes arc universal, the interactions between the children are natural, and their achievement of solutions is credible and heart-warming. Each Degrassi Street story in the book is based on an episode from the film series (twenty-six episodes to date). Each lends itself to discussion of characters and relationships that grow and change in terms children will recognize and appreciate.
