Canadian artist William Kurelek is well known for his unique depictions of prairie landscape and life in the rural prairies in the first half of the twentieth century. Morley has compiled a detailed biography of his life. Those who have enjoyed Kurelek's paintings or his illustrations in many books will find this biography useful in providing an insight into this rather mystical individual.

At times Morley's biography becomes trite and reads like a Hollywood fan magazine article on the latest screen idol, but generally speaking it is a very readable and complete account of Kurelek's convoluted life. I personally would have liked more colour reproductions of his paintings and more linking of these to his life.

The reading level of the book makes it suitable for high school libraries. It would be a useful addition in schools where biographies, particularly of Canadians, are in demand. I cannot see this book as being a popular selection for adolescent readers, as the subject matter is more of interest to adults. However, it should be considered by school libraries where teachers use this kind of material for assignments.
