This pedestrian little story seems to have been written out of nostalgia for Prince Edward Island. It is also curiously dated. The "one chance" is to win a camera whose latest features include a flash. Ten-year old Wink tries all summer to take a winning picture and gets a job helping kennel owners tend golden retrievers in order to buy film. The narrative seems to be going nowhere; suspense is lacking, since we naturally expect Wink to win. Suddenly, lightning starts a fire. Wink saves the dogs and loses his pictures, leaving his employer to do the obvious. The vocabulary is a bit above the reading interest of nine or ten year olds. Pleasant enough, but not a first choice.
