Volume 15 Number 2 1987 March This book is a sequel to The Worst Christmas Present Ever ¹. It continues the story of the Dauphinee family of Blue Harbour, Nova Scotia. Ten-year-old Lorinda and her seven-year-old brother James are sent to live with an aunt and uncle in Peterborough, Ontario, while their parents and younger sister go to Texas so that their father can recover from chronic bronchitis. Separation from family, adjustment to a new school and new friends, and to living with a childless and rather formidable aunt and uncle make life very difficult for both children, but particularly for Lorinda. To add to her misery, Lorinda is accused of stealing at school and is not allowed to play on the hockey team because she is a girl. The story ends happily. The problems at school are resolved and Aunt Marian and Uncle Harry, whose lives have been changed by the children's presence, decide to adopt a child of their own. The book is fast paced and crammed with incidents. The author attempts to deal with a number of problems ranging from fear of flying to alienation. Plot and characterization are rather superficial, but the story is lively, readable, and pleasant. Recommended for reading aloud and for reluctant readers. Anna L.
