Funk Volume 15 Number 2 1987 March Emily is a picture-book biography of a determined little girl, whom the informed reader only gradually realizes is Emily Carr, but whom the child will recognize at once as a free spirit, leading her own life and painting because she must. Cleverly, the illustrator reveals what is only stated on the very last page. Emily's crow resembles the painting "Big Raven," and the child Emily resembles the famous "Self-Portrait." A totem pole and little church confirm the fact. Another nice touch is the eager boy and girl going to the art gallery to see Emily's paintings. Emily's crow leads her into the forest to learn its beauties, an incident that may have been invented. Biographies credit Emily's pony, instead. In a short, afterword. Maria Tippett, an authority and biographer, describes Emily Carr in four paragraphs. The illustrations, which appear to be water colour over pencil drawings, are impressionistic. Some printed in sepia and some delicately coloured, they cover the whole page, and the text is superimposed on them. This book is a gem, a charming picture book on its own. and just right for directly introducing young children to a great Canadian, a great painter, and a great spirit. Grace E.
