The Native People and Explorers of Canada is a new series of books meant to discuss the relationship between the Europeans who discovered Canada and those people who already inhabited it. The books are written by Daniel C.G. Conner and Doreen Bethune-Johnson, who are faculty members at the University of British Columbia. They were assisted by teachers from British Columbia and the Northwest Territories. Eye-catching blue covers with appropriate paintings or pictures promise interesting contents. Neither teachers nor students will be disappointed in what they find.

The books are well researched and well written. Pictures, illustrations, and maps provide a break in the print. The print itself is broken by such additions as word checklists, questions on the previous chapters, and suggestions for projects; all of these headed in blue so they stand out. There is a pronounciation guide at the side of the text to assist the student when new words are introduced. This, in conjunction with a glossary and index, means that students can easily use skills that they are learning in order to obtain more information.

The three books dealing with Jacques Carder, Henry Kelsey, and James Cook include excerpts from their diaries and the diaries of those who travelled with them. The other two books deal more with the life of the native people at the time when their lands were being explored than with their specific contacts with the explorers. In the latter, some attempt is made to contrast that earlier life with present-day life among these people through the eyes of children who are approximately the age of the children for whom the books arc intended. Both approaches would provide valuable launching pads for classroom discussions and projects.

These books arc both interesting and informative. Their objectivity would make them as useful in a native classroom as in a non-native one.
