The trouble with books about sporting events is that they soon become ancient history. How many people remember that the Calgary Flames lost the Stanley Cup final to the Montreal Canadiens after having eliminated the Edmonton Oilers on a fluke goal in an earlier play-off round? How many care? On Fire: The Dramatic Rise of the Calgary Flames chronicles the 1985-86 season and the events leading up to it for the Flames. Co-authors Duhatschek arid Simmons are sportswriters for the Calgary Herald, and biased ones at that. The book is a partisan account of the fortunes of their home-town heroes. For the authors, the ultimate success seems to be victory over the hated Oilers from Edmonton. Although the style of writing is not unpleasant, the intimate details of every trade ever made by the Flames makes for rather dull reading. Individual player statistics and black-and-white photographs supplement the text. This book will have limited appeal to those outside the ranks of fans of the Calgary Flames.
