MY KIND OF PUP
Meguido Zola. Illustrated by Wendy Wolsak.
Volume 15 Number 4
In My Kind of Pup, the reader is treated to precious glimpses into the heart and mind of a young boy as he daydreams about his kind of pup. Images of the pup are characterized and brought to life with wit and humour through the wonderfully descriptive language and relaxed and friendly style of experienced children's author Meguido Zola. Illustrator Wendy Wolsak is obviously on the same wavelength as the author, whose images are further borne out by Wolsak's soft charcoal sketches detailing the comical antics and mischievious yet lovable personality of the boy's ideal. Unfortunately, the size of the book (9 x 6 inches), the two-staple binding technique, and the drab cover will not command the attention this book deserves. But its theme is too universal not to have wide appeal if given the chance. In spite of its small size, My Kind of Pup would be a good book to read aloud to small groups of children. It leaves the reader and listener with lots to think and talk about. And best of all is the unspoken, yet irresistible invitation to children to speculate on and describe what their kind of pup (or any other pet) would be like.Recommended.
