Little Stitch is a story that involves young readers early by taking them on the bike ride. The simple story-line along with the pleasing, blurred-movement illustrations by Judi Pennanen bring the children into an adventure that is made of short-cuts, downhill rides, and visits to the doctor at the hospital for stitches. It has many subtle lessons that children will understand and discuss naturally. It contains many built-in jumping-off points for discussion—the bike accident, the process of getting needles and stitches, and the comparison of the feeling of getting a bee sting and the trials and tribulations of learning to ride a bicycle. The adults in the story are visually and literally humorous yet they are also the care and comfort givers when a child is in need. Young children will really enjoy this picture book because they will easily empathize with the range of feelings the book evokes.
