Because Luke's father is unemployed, he cares for Luke full time while Luke's mother goes out to work. Luke enjoys this arrangement, although at first he finds it difficult to explain to his friends. Patricia Quinlan skillfully conveys Luke's feelings about his lifestyle and his father's reaction to being a full-time father and to searching for work. She is particularly successful in showing Luke's attempts to comfort his father when he is discouraged. This very contemporary story will be enjoyed by young children in many settings. It provides numerous openings for discussion. The illustrations by Vlasta van Kampen are most attractive; children will be fascinated by their detail. I look forward to this author's second children's book. Recommended.
