Volume 15 Number 5 1987 September The sixth book in this series takes Meg and Jamie Bain to southern Ontario in the 1870s where they become caught up in the rivalry between the old-fashioned stagecoach and the newly-arrived railroad. Bill Freeman effectively depicts the social history of the period. Despite their involvement in adventures that most young people can only dream about, Meg and Jamie come across as real teenagers who experience the usual quota of sibling squabbles and varied emotions. The mood of adventure is sustained throughout the story, building to the climax of the confrontation between the railroaders and the stagecoach owners. As an added bonus, Meg and Jamie are finally reunited with their mother at the end of the story. The book is physically appealing, with an attractive cover, good print, and fourteen pages of historic photographs. Recommended for purchase by school and public libraries.
