The publisher's blurb suggests that "this is the story of teenage rivalry set in the fabulous surroundings of Birchwood Equestrian Centre." Pre-teens and early teens who are impressed with fabulous surroundings may stay with this story to the end — all seventy-three pages of it. Few others will. The plot is predictable. The characters are stereotypes, who demonstrate not one iota of personal change or development. It is episodic and jerky; the short chapters contribute to this lack of fluidity. There is no development of suspense; hence, no crisis or significant denouement. This is a pretentious little story, which tries to make up with glamour what it cannot achieve through plot, character development, or literary style. P.J.
