Ballpark Figures is a behind-the-scenes look at a major league baseball team, the Toronto Blue Jays. Unlike most sports books, the focus here is not on game scores and player statistics, but rather on what it takes to put a professional ball team on the field. Author Larry Millson, a Toronto Globe and Mail baseball writer, describes the organization and its personalities from the chairman of the board down to the equipment manager. Included are the minor league system, the scouts, spring training, the front office, the negotiation of contracts, and the economics of running a franchise that is now estimated to be worth more than $45 million. The pace is fast and the anecdotes are interesting and numerous. Although there are no photographs and no index, this should be a popular book with any baseball fans.
