GRANDMOTHER CAME FROM DWORITZ. Vineberg, Ethel. Illustrated by Rita Briansky. Montreal, Tundra Books, 1987. 60pp, paper, $3.95, ISBN 0-88776-195-X. CIP
Volume 16 Number 6
This is a charming story of three generations of a Jewish family who moved from a shtetl in the Russian Pole to New York City in 1886, and to a farm in New Brunswick in the 1890s. Simply told by the granddaughter, one gains a sense of family, of continuity, and of love. The incidents chosen for retellingthe customs of courtship and marriage, daily life in the home, the school, and the village-give a fascinating glimpse into the past and into another culture. The charcoal drawings by Rita Briansky are sensitive and appealing, beautifully illustrating the story. Highly recommended for inter-racial understanding.
