Volume 16 Number 1
Peter MacDonald, journalist and lawyer, writes a column, "Court Jesters," in the Canadian Bar Association publication, The National. In 1985 he published Court Jesters, humorous tales from Canada's courts. His new volume contains legal laughs from five hundred contributors across Canada. In the foreword, Edward Greenspan comments, "To me, a good sense of humour is an essential part of the makeup of a lawyer. Humour breaks courtroom tension and preserves sanity. It puts things into perspective." MacDonald uses examples of the quick wit and repartee that help lawyers excel in court. He describes some lawyers and judges who are born entertainers, hamming it up both within and outside their careers whenever the occasion permits. He includes stupid questions which have admitted lawyers to the "Hall of Shame," as well as quips and puns, bloopers and malapropisms which have delighted courtroom audiences. An entire chapter is devoted to The Polish Prince, Judge Allan Wachowich, who believes, "The best medicine is a good belly laugh." The earthy atmosphere of trials involving drunks, prostitutes and criminals is reflected in the lively and bawdy language, Kooks and perverts vividly describe their shenanigans. This is a good volume to add to the humour collection of a public library, especially for a reader interested in the law.
