Disenchanted fad-dieters and readers looking for a holistic approach to eating sensibly will welcome The Enlightened Eater. Written by award-winning Toronto Sun food editor Marion Kane and dietician-nutritionist Rosie Schwartz, this book is not for the lazy or non-committal. As the absence of prepared menus and the plentiful nutritional guidelines indicate, the authors are concerned with encouraging people to meet the challenge of becoming responsible eaters. All the facts are here, presented in an informal, readable style. Chapters are included on fibre, protein, starch, and fruits and "veggies," with caloric and nutritional charts (metric only) and over 140 low-fat recipes (metric and imperial). Other topics covered include establishing good eating patterns, food tips for singles, families and seniors, and food "facts and fallacies." Much of the information may not be new, but the authors have added straightforward explanations for many of our hazily familiar "food rules" that help to bring the overall nutritional picture into focus. Well bound (although the book won't lie flat at the recipes) with an attractive cover, The Enlightened Eater is carefully indexed and includes a bibliography. For people ready to get serious about nutrition, this is a great place to start.
