CIP Adult Reviewed by Margaret MacLean Volume 16 Number 3 1988 May The title Between Men is something of a double entendre as Katherine Govier skilfully weaves her story of the relationships between men—friends, brothers, fathers and sons, and colleagues-around the story of women's relationships with husbands, lover, and new husbands. In other words, it is women's lives between men. Then there is the underlying story of an Indian woman's violent death in a Calgary tavern 100 years before. The two stories are linked by the protagonist, who is a social history professor struggling to keep her course on the curriculum of a Calgary college and furthering her career, as well as her major academic interest, by her investigations into the mysterious death of the Indian woman in 1889. Both strands are convincing and important. The earlier story underlines the feminist stance of one major character, the moral stance of another. An excellent choice for a Canadian literature course for senior students and, of course, for adult readers. Margaret MacLean, Central Technical School, Toronto, Ont.
