He begins to blow a bubble as he spins the big globe of the world that sits on the table. He doesn't suspect the power of bubble gum. He sees Australia . . . koala bears, duckbilled platypuses, kangaroos . . . and suddenly realizes he is sitting in the pouch of a big red kangaroo. Then the stove becomes a Chinese dragon; the fridge is Antarctica inhabited by penguins; the bathtub melts away into the Seven Seas; the piano turns into an African elephant. He even visits medieval England and outer space. This is Paul Montpellier's first book, in which he alms to "interest children in the world outside their own environment, and the pleasures involved in imagination and bubblegum." Atlas is an unusual introduction to geography for all ages. The story is simply told and Alias is a good read-aloud book. Montpellier's beautiful, full-colour illustrations make Alias a fascinating visual experience for younger children. Paul Montpellier was born in Vancouver and trained at the Calgary Art School.
