CIP Grades 6 to 8 Reviewed by Marc Shaw Volume 16 Number 4 1988 July Before his near-fatal accident in 1983, Jocelyn Lovell had had a remarkable string of cycling successes, a record that culminated in three gold medals at the 1978 Commonwealth Games and a silver medal at the World Cycling Championships that same year. He had also earned a reputation as a controversial and outspoken individual, and since his accident he has emerged as a high-profile spokesman for the disabled. Coady's book traces Lovell's life and career from his childhood through his sporting triumphs to the present. She places great emphasis on his younger years and the influences that drew him to a racing career. Lovell's successes, marriage and business career are portrayed. The latter part of the book deals with the aftermath of the accident, his survival and his refusal to accept the idea of spending the rest of his life in a wheelchair. Coady's account gives considerable insight into the dally lives of quadriplegics and fosters an important awareness of the disabled. Coady, who has earlier dealt with the sports world in a biography of Steve Podborski, has written an interesting and sensitive account. Her text is enhanced by a dozen photographs and a chronology. Written at about a grade 6 level, Champion on Wheels will appeal to both male and female students at the senior elementary level. They will find it both entertaining and informative.
