Susan Pryke grew up in Muskoka and taught there for ten years after obtaining her B.Sc. She is now a professional writer and she teaches courses in writing at Georgian College in Orilla.

If you are looking for a geography of the Muskoka region, look elsewhere, for Pryke's view of the geography and geo-morphology tends to be romantic rather than scientific. She seeks out snippets of local historical information before they are lost under the brambles, grass and overlay of later inhabitants. Her descriptions are not all-encompassing, but are based upon particular tours by road. Her intimate style just fits the mood of the book, which, she says, is written for the local inhabitants, tourists, and distant dreamers who might, on browsing Explore Muskoka, feel lured to visit. Her maps are clear and uncluttered. The quality of the colour photographs is superb and is a great credit to the photographer, G.W. Campbell. The quality of the reproduction of the historical photographs is also above average.

Explore Muskoka received the American Association of State and Local History Award for Merit and the Heritage Canada Communication Award.

Recommended for all Muskoka local history collections and to all local historians across the country who might be seeking a model for their own area.
