CIP Pre-school to Grade 3 Reviewed by Maureen Pammett Volume 16 Number 4 1988 July Have Fun with Magnifying is the first in an exciting new series especially developed by the Ontario Science Centre for children under eight years of age. If the rest of the series is as well done, this will be a bonanza for teachers of young children as well as for parents. Reid, who has done such delightful work as The New Baby Calf (Scholastic-TAB. 1984), has used a technique quite different from her plasticine work. The illustrations are large and cartoonlike except for the tiny items to be magnified. Children will pore over these black-and-white pictures not only for ideas and for the meticulous details, but also for the humour. The text is simple and very easy to understand; the instructions are brief. The rest of the pages provide things for the children to do with the magnifier, based on what the child actually sees. The scientific basis for this is experimentation and observation, excellent skills for the young to develop. The concluding page gives a clear explanation of how the eye sees and why some of the pictures did a flip-a useful page for the adults involved!
