Fred Gaffen is probably the ideal person to write this book. An historian with the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa, Gaffen has a keen interest in the United Nations and its peace-keeping activities and he has written numerous articles for military and historical magazines. It is only appropriate, therefore, that he write about the much neglected but very important topic of Canada's involvement in UN peace-keeping activities. Since the UN has only been around since the end of World War II, Gaffen's book deals only with events from 1948 to 1987. The material is organized by the areas of the world in which these missions have taken place (Middle East, South Asia, Africa and Latin America). The problem with this book is the writing style. The facts are correct and there are no apparent biases (other than a little Canadian patriotism), but this book is not for the lay reader. Indeed, Gaffen seems to be writing a military report rather than a history of military activity. The activities described in this book have a lot to do with Canada's current international reputation. That reason alone is enough to make this an important book Recommended for libraries with active military collections.
