Yet another title that deals with the first day of school, this may be one too many in your collection. For its genre, though, it is well done. The oldest of three children in the Rabbit Family, Button is pleased to be the first to get his new pencil box and to start off with Mother and Father, but he takes along his toy, Super Rabbit, as his security blanket. The baby and his sad younger sister are promised a turn with the pencil box after school. The soft attractive illustrations are done in a combination of water-colour washes, ink, carbon pencil and coloured pencil. Each page is full of action with lots of detail for children to pore over and interpret. The use of ear position to indicate the rabbit's feelings is very effective. The text in primary printing in balloons over the rabbits' heads la sparse-all conversation. This presentation makes Off to School particularly useful for easy reading material at a late grade 1 level. Other books about the rabbit family are Halloween Surprises (Penguin, 1986). Christmas Secrets (Penguin, 1986), and Birthday Wishes (Viking, 1986).
