CIP Grades 10 and up Reviewed by Mollie Hooper Volume 16 Number 4 1988 July Captain William Hagelund, author of Flying the Chase Flag (Ryerson, 1961) and The Halibut Hunters (McCraw, 1963), is well qualified to write Whalers No More. He signed on as a member of a whaling ship at the age of sixteen, went into the Canadian navy during the war, and has since been a marine surveyor, chief engineer, and boat builder. His purpose in writing the book is to preserve a significant part of the history of the west coast. Using his own experiences arid those of legendary harpooners of early British Columbia, he has produced an exciting book covering the years of whaling between 1905 and 1972. Hagelund brings alive the workings of a. whaling ship, the trade of the whalers, and the dangers faced by the men. His many revealing stories of the undersea world give us first-hand knowledge of such fascinating things as the Dance of the Whales, the sperm whales' ambergris, a whale with legs, the giant octopus, sea monsters, and many more. The book itself is well organized with easy-to-read print and lay person's language. It has strategically placed photos, maps and diagrams, an appendix of whaling companies, their ships and catch statistics, and a bibliography and index. Whalers No More is the first study of this west-coast industry and will appeal to all lovers of the history of our province as well as to those who just enjoy a well-told tale.
