First published in a black-and-white soft-cover edition in 1983, A Difficult Day has been reissued with bright full-page illustrations and laminated board covers. Written and illustrated by Eugenie Fernandes. It is sure to strike a chord of familiarity in both parents and children. Melinda waking from a poor night's sleep, finds herself getting angrier and more frustrated as her day goes on. With comments like "I don't like you anymore" and "Why don't you love me better?" directed towards her, Melinda's mother takes the brunt of Melinda's anger and temper. Melinda day-dreams of a place where people will "love me and they'll hug me when I feel sad." But Meilnda finds she doesn't have to go away to find love and acceptance. With hugs, kisses and cookies, Melinda's understanding mother puts an end to Melinda's difficult day. One can only hope that Melinda's difficult days are few and far between. A Difficult Day is bright and colourful. The print is large and there are few sentences on each page. The vocabulary is easy enough for a beginning reader to read independently.
