John Kendrick was resident engineer and project manager for the building of the Alcan aluminum smelter, the Kemano hydro power complex, and the port and town of Kitimat, B.C. There were difficulties choosing a site for Kitimat. The displacement of the native population was fairly easy but involved some disturbing ethical decisions. Special provincial legislation was necessary so dial land ownership could be established and property could be bought and sold! As a history of a company town, this book is valuable. As entertainment, it is good for those with a technical bent. A knowledge of geography and/or hydro production would enhance enjoyment of the history' Notes, bibliography and Index are useful and may help others to write about this topic. At times the treatment is too brief for the general reader. A good topographic map Is needed to follow the discussion of the reservoir site and power house location. Like many personal stories written by men of action, this one is sometimes a little disjointed. If the occasional brief accounts of personalities had been fleshed out with Peter Newman's touch, the story would really live.
