Congratulations to Betty Kilgour for producing a dandy book about her experiences in Africa. Kilgour wrote a column for Alberta newspapers for ten years and her material will capture the interest of a wide spectrum of readers. Kilgour and her daughter accompanied Kilgour’s husband to Tanzania where he served as a CUSO volunteer in charge of four livestock ranches. The accounts of different aspects of her life there are sympathetic yet accurate portrayals of life in Tanzania in the rural areas. She tells of her friend Joyce, her houseman Prosper, witchcraft, the orientation program, the cattle ranch, a holiday in Dar es Salaam and a visit to Kilimanjaro. We read about spending Christmas and coping with wild animals. I found So This Is Africa very interesting and I am sure that good readers in grade 7 would enjoy it, too. So would students in all the high school grades, especially if their roots were in Africa. I hope that the book receives the wide audience that it deserves.
