Benson Volume 16 Number 5 1988 September The Hospital for Wounded Angels is a fine example of art dedicated to the alienation of the average person. The book's convoluted and largely imaginary theme based on the artist's egocentric concern for her own ideas and impressions would appeal only to the most esoteric of audiences. The book is a case of neither fish nor fowl, as though the artist herself had no clear idea of what she wanted the finished project to be or to represent. If the reader could retrace Dickson's route or were as familiar as she is with the gardens she refers to. The book would make more sense. But in its present form the book comes across more as a hopeless jumble of day-to-day impressions rather than as a serious work of art designed with a purpose in mind. The title became more provocative as I read this book and endeavoured to ascertain whether the artist was referring to the gardens, the statues, or, more probably, herself. One thing is clear from reviewing this book. The author did not write it to become rich. At $40.00 per book I doubt that many will be sold. At $4.00 per book, I still could not. In good conscience, recommend this book for any library. This is the type of book that gives art a bad name rather than promotes it. W. F. Benson, Golden, B.C.
