Grades 5-7 / Ages 10-12 Reviewed by Dorothy Dodge. Volume 16 Number 6 1988 November Ann Walsh has written two novels, Your Time My Time ¹ and Moses, Me and Murder. Both are situated in Barkerville, BC. The first is historical fiction / fantasy for the twelve-year-old - young adult age group. It is well written and is a great favourite in our secondary school (I've replaced it twice). Moses, Me and Murder is also fictionalized history, but it is based on a true story using factual events and real people. The main character, Ted, is pure fiction. Young Ted, a twelve-year-old boy in Barkerville, befriends Moses, the barber. James Barry, a big scowling bully confronts Moses, who is looking for his friend Charles Blessing, and tells him to shut up and mind his own business. Moses suspects Barry of being involved in Blessing's disappearance. The characterization is realistic and the historical background is excellent. The author has a real "feeling" for Barkerville. The story flows well, with enough excitement to keep interest high, even with all the historical data supplied. The print is large: the book is well bound and has a sturdy, glossy cover. I would definitely recommend this story as support material for the Barkerville unit at the elementary level. I am currently reading Moses to our grade 7 class and they are thoroughly enjoying it.
