In two of the book's three stories, all based on episodes from the "Kids of Degrassi Street" television show, a child's embarrassment about parents leads to the child's lying. Chuck Riley, of "Chuck Makes a Choice," wants to impress the new girl in school and tells her his father is a pilot when, in reality, Chuck's father, convicted of theft, resides in a neighbourhood halfway house. The balance Catherine Peters, a.k.a. Cookie, seeks in "Catherine Finds Her Balance" is one of equilibrium between her separated but still warring parents. When Cookie becomes part of the school's gymnastics team and is competing in an interschool meet, she is afraid that both her parents will come to watch her performance, begin fighting and publicly humiliate her.

Finally, Lisa Canard, of the story The Canards Move Out," is initially upset when she learns her father has decided to move to Vancouver in order to improve the family's economic status. All three stories conclude positively, though not completely happily, for the central juvenile characters. A still picture from the show about Catherine adorns the cover to remind potential readers of the book's connection to the TV show. Each story is less satisfactorily introduced by a black-and-white line drawing, which lacks the impact a photo from the episode might have had.

Satisfactory reading for Degrassi Street fans.
