CIP Pre-school to Grade 3 Reviewed by Brenda Watson Volume 16 Number 6 1988 November The Dylan in Dylan's Lullaby calls his own lullaby to wrap him in a satin ribbon and whisk him off to the Face in the Sky. The Face uses his magic to show Dylan birds, horses, a silver ball, fish and a magical tree laden with food. Dylan joins in the dance of the fish, eats a prickly fruit and then returns home. The idea of a night journey is reminiscent of Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are (New York: Harper and Row Junior Books, 1963, 1984), but, unfortunately, this story lacks the enchantment of the former. The story is too wordy and the Face in the Sky lacks the appeal of the Wild Things-being at times grotesque and at other times almost parental. The format and illustrations are not outstanding. A page of text alternates with a water-colour picture of Dylan floating around in a starry blue sky. The print is round and slanted. Most disturbing is the unnaturalness of Dylan's appearance. He appears plastic rather than warm and his features are not drawn consistently from page to page. There are many more imaginative and successful bedtime stories to choose from. Not recommended.
