Volume 16 Number 6
This volume is a conglomeration of information about Finland—festivals, customs, myths and folklore illustrated with colour sketches and woodcuts. Information is presented in an unfortunate combination of story and straight informational style, and folklore and myth are interspersed with accounts of customs and festivals. Neither style has distinction, and particularly in the retelling of the traditional tales, the simplicity, rhythm and beauty associated with these genres are never evident. Information on the festivals seems to follow the calendar year, with customs (weddings, funerals, costume, foods, games) forming separate sections. The illustrations often help to explain the text but are amateurish and unattractive. We do need books on Canadian holiday celebrations but this is not the one.
