In Jonah's story a grandmother with the first symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease comes to slay with her grandchildren. The main character in the story is Becky. She has two younger brothers, Matthew and Anthony. The grandchildren are not anxious to have their critical, rather cool grandmother come to visit. They soon start to realize that Grandma is not herself—her blouse is inside out, she forgets where the kitchen is, and she accuses Matthew of stealing money from her. They come to understand that Grandma is sick, and when she leaves to enter a nursing home, Becky picks forget-me-nots for her. An epilogue tells us that Grandma died four years later. The author writes from experience, having had a grandmother with Alzheimer’s disease. The story is simply told and the cartoon like water-colour drawings that illustrate the text are as good as many done by more mature artists. Recommended for reading aloud and for independent reading by young children. They will enjoy this realistic and sympathetic story of an ailing grandparent. Brenda Watson, Dunsmuir J.S.
