The history of the Canadian glass industry is the focus, but the author begins at the beginning and includes the story of the first man-made glass, believed to be the feat of the Phoenicians—a story he disputes. King discusses glassblowers and men who made significant contributions to the Canadian glass industry. Later chapters give a detailed account of every company ever involved in Canada's glass-making industry, with information on how the companies wore chartered and which ones vanished quickly and why. It is not only the history of the companies, however, that makes this book an important one. There is also a section on bottle markings and closures, together with excellent illustrations in an appendix. Throughout the book there are maps showing companies' locations and historic photographs, illustrations and newspaper advertisements of glassware as well as of many aspects of glass-making production. There is also a selected glossary, a selected bibliography and an index. This book has fascinating details of the glass-making craft and industry. Recommended for every public library.
