Her disclaimer in the introduction that she is not a specialist on the subject of world religions is the most noteworthy statement in 120 pages of text. Resford's goal is to give adolescents a better understanding of the major and minor faiths of the world today—indeed, a most praiseworthy endeavour. However, her lack of expertise is most obvious in the chapter dealing with Christianity. Besides her misunderstanding of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, her knowledge of modern scriptural exegesis is archaic. In a word, the section on Christianity should be removed and revised, perhaps in accordance with the Jerome Biblical Commentary edited by Raymond E. Brown, et al. (Englewood Cliffs. N.J.: Prentice-Hall, 1969). The other religions fare somewhat better. However, the treatment is too superficial and diluted to be of pedagogical value. What is most disturbing is the glaring absence in the bibliographies of such experts in the field as Ninian Smart and Mircea Eliade. In addition to the five major religions, seven others are also treated: Zoroastrianism, Sikhism, Baha'i, Confucianism, Taoism, Shintoism and Jainism.
