The work is divided into three major sections: "Common Misconceptions," "Concepts in the Quran," and "A Selection of Verses." The topics discussed in each section are listed in the table of contents. The wide margins and clear, large type make for easy reading. Fifteen beautiful colour photographs are sprinkled sparingly among the pages. As an introduction to Islam Light upon Light leaves much to be desired. As Dr. Thomas B. Irving states in the foreword, Kahn's system of transliteration does not correspond completely to any of the officially prescribed systems. Yet, claims Irving, Khan's version is better than what is often published in North America. For a seasoned student of Islam the brief and often superficial treatment of polygamy, the Holy War, Allah, sin, success, etc., will serve to recall some of the basic concepts. For the novice, the work lacks logical development and depth. Additional footnotes would have proven useful in explaining more difficult portions of the Koranic text. The eight references suggested for further information at the conclusion of the work are meagre. In general, the reader is presented with a truncated view of Islam. For classroom use one should look elsewhere for more suitable material.
