Nights Below Station Street takes place in a remote mill town in northern New Brunswick. It is a story about the people of that town, their struggle for survival, their loves, their hates and their desires. The central characters are Joe, an unemployed drunk, his wife Rita, and their daughter Adele. Adele’s young and rebellious, calls her father Joe, is often rude to him, yet offers to rub his back when she thinks he is in pain. Adele's relationships with her mother, with her sister and with her boyfriend all contribute to the story. Richards' imagery and descriptions make for realism in the book. Richards is himself from New Brunswick and brings to life the characters in his book. His characters become very human, sometimes humorous and often tough. They struggle to surmount their difficulties and their problems, despite many setbacks. Richards' other books include Road to the Stilt House* and Lives of Short Duration (McClelland and Stewart. 1986).
