The location of the horse is the two young sisters' well-kept secret.

This story is set in the Canadian West. A young widowed mother and her two children are trying to hold on to their restaurant. The story is a delightfully enjoyable adventure, with the main characters, who are children, shaping the events of the suspenseful, sometimes comical plot. The characters of both girls, as well as those of the mother and some of the townspeople-including the mayor, who owns the competing restaurant, and his son, whom the girls nickname Nasty Nestor--are fully developed.

The narrative is written in the first person from the point of view of Jane, the elder, clumsier sister. The reader becomes involved in the action by slipping into the role of one of the onlookers who are rooting for the girls, or perhaps as one of the children themselves.
