In this adventure, Susan, who is looking after her two-year-old niece, joins her friend Evelyn for a week's vacation at a remote lodge in the Chilcotin wilderness. This setting is well described and integrated into the story. Since the last book, Susan has taken flying lessons and her varying levels of confidence play a part in the plot. The conflict between her yearning for independence and her attraction to the young Mountie, Allan, contribute to the well-rounded character development of this heroine. The plot contains plenty of action, with murder, kidnapping, hostage-taking, blackmail and international crime. Although it is somewhat less plausible than the previous books, it should hold the interest of mystery fans. As with previous books in the series, there are no illustrations except for the rather unattractive cover. The print is large and easy to read. Esther Hutchison, Spruce Grove, Alta.
