“I never, ever sleep," declares the narrator. A young child, reluctant to go to sleep, lies in bed and recounts the ways other people and creatures go to sleep. Sleepers is intended to be read aloud. The rhyming text flows naturally, in vocabulary suitable for beginning readers. Adults will enjoy the sly humour and recognize the tendency to fall asleep in cars, on park benches and in bath tubs. Writer-Illustrator Khalsa of Montreal plans the outline for her books and as she paints the illustrations she develops and refines the text, thinking visually and literally at the same time. Since 1983 Khalsa has created a series of books for new-born babies, including Tales of a Gambling Grandma* and I Want a Dog (Tundra, 1987), which was chosen by Time magazine as one of the outstanding children's books of 1987. The bold, vivid illustrations have a Jewel-like Far Eastern flavour.
