Volume 16 Number 6 1988 November Purich, a practising lawyer and director of University of Saskatchewan's Native Law Centre, has written four previous books. The current work deals specifically with the Métis, often making comparisons with rights demanded by or granted to Indian or Inuit groups for emphasis or clarification. The book focuses "on the mixed blood population of the Canadian west and north," those commonly recognized as Métis. Although he is not a native person, Purich's sensitive perception of their concerns allows him to look fairly at their problems from a broad perspective. Purich considers the following Métis Issues In their historical contexts: constitutional questions (e.g. Manitoba's Métis settlements); recognition as a distinct society, culturally, linguistically and by birth; and self-government. The various constitutional conferences from 1978 through 1987 are discussed in detail. Aboriginal title and land rights, equality and self-government negotiations are a never-ending struggle, as is ongoing litigation over rights to oil and gas revenues from settlement lands. Purich's opposing scenarios for the future provide excellent debating topics for the student. The reasonably up-to-date data can be supplemented with more recent press items. Recommended for native studies, Canadian history and politics courses. Has a very good bibliography and is indexed.
